What Every Pet Owner Needs to Know

In their bowls can carry hidden dangers. From herbicides like paraquat to termite treatments like Termidor and monthly flea preventives, these chemicals are approved for use yet raise serious questions about long-term health—especially for our pets.
Paraquat remains legal in the United States even though it’s banned in more than fifty countries. The EPA maintains that properly labeled use doesn’t show a clear link to cancer or Parkinson’s, but some studies on farmworkers and those near heavy applications suggest elevated Parkinson’s risk. It’s a stark reminder that “approved” doesn’t always mean safe in real-world conditions.
Termidor, widely used along property lines to protect homes from termites, contains fipronil—an insecticide the EPA classifies as a possible human carcinogen based on thyroid tumors in rats. In beach communities where ocean air keeps the soil perpetually damp and sandy conditions allow runoff during heavy rains, fipronil’s half-life can stretch to 122 days or longer. Wet residue transfers more easily to paws and fur, increasing the chance dogs will lick it off. While the product is considered low hazard to mammals once fully dry, concentrated forms can cause vomiting, tremors, or seizures. Chronic low-level exposure from heavy coastal use hasn’t been directly studied in pets, so the long-term cancer or neurologic risk remains uncertain.
Monthly flea and tick preventives add another layer. The isoxazoline class—Nexgard, Bravecto, and similar products—carries FDA warnings for rare neurologic reactions including seizures. Older formulations with organophosphates or pyrethrins have been linked to higher bladder cancer rates in dogs. These products are deemed safe and effective overall, yet the neurologic risks are documented.
Even commercial dog food isn’t immune. A recent Clean Label Project test of seventy-nine popular brands found dry kibble averaging 180 parts per billion lead, 185 parts per billion arsenic, and 48 parts per billion acrylamide—levels up to twenty-four times higher than fresh or frozen options. Forty-seven percent of best-sellers exceeded some safety limits. These contaminants, combined with pesticide residues, may contribute to the roughly one-in-four dogs that develop cancer over their lifetime.
The same risks extend to public parks, beaches, and sidewalks where your dog walks every day. Lawn herbicides like 2,4-D have been linked to higher lymphoma rates in dogs, and studies show pets exposed to treated grass face elevated cancer odds. Fipronil from nearby Termidor treatments or spot-ons on other dogs can wash into public areas or water during rain, and wet sandy soil keeps residues active longer. Rinse your dog’s paws after every outing and steer clear of unnaturally perfect green lawns that scream “just sprayed.”
Regulators like the EPA and FDA face legitimate criticism for industry influence and narrow safety definitions that focus on labeled use rather than real-world chronic exposure. That’s not the same as a deliberate cover-up, but it does mean the burden often falls on pet owners to connect the dots. Multiple low-level sources add up over years, and our dogs—closer to the ground, more likely to lick their paws, and living shorter but intense lives—feel the effects first.
The good news is we can reduce the risk. Keep dogs off treated strips until the product is fully dry. Rinse paws after walks in areas where Termidor or similar sprays have been used. Choose fresh or gently cooked foods when possible, or at least research brands that test for heavy metals. Ask your vet about the full risk profile of any preventive medication before starting it.
Our pets can’t read labels or advocate for themselves. They rely on us to notice when something isn’t right and to push for answers when the official line feels incomplete. The chemicals may be legal, but that doesn’t make them harmless—and the more we talk about it, the sooner we can protect the dogs we love.
